The Devil in Neo-Paganism

There is a kneejerk reaction to say "pagans don't work with the devil." I believe for the most part this is true. I do not consider myself a capital "P" Pagan. I consider myself a witch and an animist, but not a Pagan.

I remember when people were rediscovering Silver Ravenwolf's title Teen Witch for the first time there was controversary surrounding it. Mainly because of her statement that there are no Satanic Witches because Witches don't believe in Satan. This was th early 2010s when witchcraft became popular once more in the cultural zeitgeist and when I was re-exposed to it as a nineteen year old. I remember being one of the people who thought Silver was one of the dumbest people on Earth for her statements. Now looking back on it, I realize I was the one suffering from dunning-krueger thinking I knew more than Silver.

One must remember when Teen Witch was written, who it was written by, and who it was written for. Teen Witch was released in the 90s during the Satanic Panic. Wiccans and Pagans were already at risk of losing their jobs and being ostracized. In some cases some people could lose their kids. It was written by a Wiccan. This is true for Silver as in Wicca there is no Devil. Wiccans have a divine male and a divine female, and the divine male - the Horned God isn't a "devilish" figure. He is the lord of the hunt, consort to the Moon Goddess. He will die and revive with the changing of the year. Again, it makes sense for Silver to make it clear that there's no Satanic Wiccans. Now, I know she says "witches" instead of "Wiccans" but you will find a lot of Wiccans will use the two interchangeably. I do think Silver should have clarified. The book was written for teenagers. Again, it's the Satanic Panic and the if you were to ask a fervent believer of this conspiracy theory who the victims are they would say "children." Making sure that you're writing a book that leaves no room for doubt that there's no satanism in wicca, makes sense.
